Well that was disappointing...
Sep. 29th, 2008 09:28 pmSo, it was a busy weekend, but sadly not a terribly productive one. I went to Art vs Art on Friday after running errands all day, only to find that I didn't even get into the top 32. There were some really lame pics that did make it in though-- remember me whining about the stupid circles piece? Yeah, that somehow got in. Talking with other artists later, I found that a lot of them were really not happy with how things turned out; they said that it's really become too much of a popularity contest with the online voting, and a lot of people said they didn't think they were going to do it again next year. I am undecided. My painting did sell for $50, so that's okay, but still.
The event itself was pretty cool, even if it did involve waaaay too much screaming. Not quite as bad as when we went to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra last year though. Honestly the most surprising part of the evening was seeing how much money people were willing to throw down to save really terrible paintings from the chopping block. One painting, a very boring piece that was all black except for a little tunnel, not only made it to the third round but also fetched $450 at auction. I was quite sad-- I really wanted to see that one get trashed. It really became a cult thing, where people would keep bidding on even the boring pieces just because. I mean, the whole point is to watch these paintings get destroyed, right? So why spend all that money on crappy art?
The winner was the piece with the girl on the wires with the crows, so that was good; it was probably my favorite of the lot. My friend from the zoo got second with her onion head with plant (?). Sadly nobody bought her painting, but they set it on fire and then chainsaw'd it, so it was a pretty cool death.
Saturday was the art fair, which meant I had to get up far too early in the morning. I set up and things looked pretty nice-- I got some pictures of the booth, which I'll have to put up later. There were a lot of cool artists there, including my friend Mike; I had class with him a few years back. Really amazing painter, and some of his murals were just stunning. Great stuff. Sadly I did not do very well at the fair, and sold only two prints... I think part of it was that I didn't have time to properly prepare some things, and part of it was that things were just generally slow. Alas.
Yesterday I cleaned my room, went to Qdoba with the Abbie-lady, and then sat and read a book. It was a wonderful day.
Got back into the swing of things today... I managed to get my last watercolor over halfway done, which was great; and although I still need to poke at a few places in the others, I'm not too worried about it. Illustration was likewise productive; I got my picture basically done, except for the effects with the ink, and the matting/mounting for critique. I got to draw CDs, too. They were very colorful. Hee. :3
So now it's raining and the temperature is meant to be much colder tomorrow-- probably going to be in the low 60's all this week. I'm happy fall is here at last (September is no time for 80-degree temperatures) but... cold.
Ah well.
