So yesterday we went to see Wicked again, bringing along the wee hobbit this time as well. We left at 3, since the roads were slushy and tricky, but managed to get to the city by 4, so we still had an hour to kill before the 'sneak peek' event, Behind the Emerald Curtain. We ended up spending it wandering around Macy's.

The sneak peek thing was pretty cool, if a bit different from what I'd expected. I'd been thinking of an actual "backstage" experience, but this was mostly just little details. They had a few costumes and some props and little displays out in the lobby for us to browse, and then two of the actors in more minor roles/understudies talked to us about the making of the set and the costumes and a few pieces of trivia. I did sneak a couple pictures of the stage set while we were in there talking, mostly because the one actor didn't bother to tell us not to take pictures until nearly the end of the talk. Hehehe. I'll get those up a bit later.

We went back to Macy's and ate dinner-- we were hoping to get in to the Walnut Room with the big shiny Christmas tree, but alas, we had no such luck. Instead we went to the food court and got some very tasty quesadillas and pizza.

When we went back out it was still snowing-- in fact, it basically snowed all evening, which was in itself pretty cool. Rather neat to see the city all alight in the middle of the snow. Of course, the streets were also full of slush, and it was difficult to dodge the puddles at the curbs because they were half frozen over and looked almost solid because of it.

Anyway we went and saw the show again, and it was excellent of course. This time we had the official actress playing Elphaba, and it was interesting to see the differences between the two performances because of it, even if the ones I noticed were really very minor. Of course, I was also never sure sometimes if the inflections I was remembering were from the previous performance or the soundtrack with the original Broadway cast. I have to say generally there aren't a lot of differences between the two (although I'm no music master, so my ear's not that tuned anyway) but the actresses playing Elphaba tended to sing a bit more deeply and hit some lower notes than the Broadway cast, and I rather like the Chicago Fiyero (Kristoffer...something) better.

By the time we got out it had changed from snow to rain... which made the drive a bit easier, but compacted a lot of the snow we'd gotten (and we got a good 4-6 inches). So today it is half snow and half slush, with pockets of ice underneath it all. Lovely! It's supposed to rain/snow today, and maybe freeze tonight. There are rumors that it will hit 50 on Friday and melt everything, but the way Indiana weather goes who knows what will happen.

Later there will be church, and then... sitting around and relaxing, probably, while the hobbits bounce off the walls. While I continue downloading Adobe CS4*.

*Totally legally, this time. IUPUI is offering up downloads of Adobe Software for free, including the CS4 Design Premium package (which includes Fireworks and Dreamweaver). How sweet izzat? I'll be sad to lose Photoshop CS2, but the rest is awesome. :D

I return!

I half-thought about writing a post Sunday evening, but I was way too jet-lagged for anything coherent. No problem, I thought, I'll do something tomorrow.

...not so much.

As it turned out, not only did we get hit by some thunderstorms Monday morning, but later in the evening we got hit with a series of severe storms that ended with an F2 tornado.

The tornado itself hit Griffith, which is rather south and east of us, but the whole area got trashed anyway. Our power went out almost immediately as the first storm hit (around 8:30 pm) and did not return until a full 24 hours later, earlier this evening. Half the basement ended up under 3" of water (thankfully this did not include my room), and a fair number of the streets around were impassable this morning due to fallen branches and lightning-struck trees. We actually took a brief drive around, and on some streets nearly every other tree had been hit. There were were one or two houses that had actually been all but buried by the fallen trees. Eric later reported that several of his buddies at work (which is in Griffith) went out and took pictures over their lunch break. They apparently found one house where the tree had not only crushed the center of the house, but the uprooting had also flipped their car on its side and wrecked that as well. It was crazy.

(In typical Munster fashion, our major crisis was that people apparently screwed traffic badly on Calumet Ave--the main road leading to the expressway--by driving back and forth in search of coffee. Dunkin Donuts had no power; Munster Donuts had power but no water, so they could sell donuts but not coffee. People flipped out over this. Munster, you fail.)

The kids couldn't go to their babysitter's since there was no power, so they stayed at home and we spent the majority of the afternoon bailing water out of the basement. And I went slightly insane. We actually succeeded in draining nearly all of it... and then we went to rest and it all came back. D:

We were really beginning to think that we weren't going to get power back at all until at least tomorrow, and I even went to get extra ice and candles and such, but fortunately they did come back on. There are still parts of the town that don't have power, though, and apparently large parts of Illinois (where there were two other tornadoes, both around F1) are still without power and probably will not get it back for several days. The news is reporting that over 500,000 houses ended up without power, which included basically all of Lake County today and part of Porter.

In short... WTF Indiana. Yes, I did say I wanted a proper thunderstorm after months of being in Japan, where they think a few flashes of lightning is something to get excited about (even though it rarely ever even strikes the ground), but really.

Also, why is this becoming a trend? The last time I came back from Japan, a day or two later we had an earthquake. (Which never happens!) Now I come back and there's a huge tornado?
