So today was the opening for the Herron Student Show (which once again I did not get in this year) and it was also the Herron Honors & Awards ceremony. Normally I probably wouldn't have gone, but Kathy told me a week or two back that I should make a point to show up, since I was going to get something, and shortly after that I got both an e-mail and a printed letter telling me I had won some sort of award.
I didn't expect much. I knew Herron didn't really have a lot of funds that it dedicated to things like drawing or illustration, so I expected something rather small. Helpful, but unexciting.
As it turned out, I got the Bill Peet Memorial Award. "For excellence in illustration or drawing."
(Bill Peet is one of the few sorta-famous people to come out of Herron; he graduated in the 1930's and then became one of Disney's most famous illustrators and storyboarders for something like 30 years.)
This was a really nice award, far more than anything I expected. I was already stunned.
Then they called me up again.
They got through the departmental awards and started announcing the special awards, including the Louise E. Fulton/IMA* scholarships. The Dean, who was presenting the awards, was talking about how students had to submit a portfolio along with having a minimum GPA of 3.5, and I was vaguely musing about how I should make a point to try for that next year... and then I heard my name.
The second award was slightly nicer even than the first, and when I got back to my seat and surreptitiously checked the front of the envelope I had to cover my mouth while quietly freaking out. I was totally shocked in the best way. (I didn't even remember submitting a portfolio! Or did they just mean the normal sample of images? And had my essay this year really been that good? omgomgomg. And so forth.)
I was also pleased to see quite a few of my friends get awards-- Britt and Liana got awards for illustration too, Whitney got an award for painting, and Michael, who's in illustration as well, got two awards for printmaking. Unfortunately Lowell didn't get the Menz award that he was nominated for, which is a shame, but as he was up against a bunch of photography, printmaking, and furniture designers, I guess I wasn't too surprised that the judges didn't pick the sort of weird surreal drawings. Even if Lowell's drawings were awesome and much more interesting than the photography.
Afterwards everyone headed over to Herron, and I chatted with Britt and Joe while eating the nibbles, which had an interesting carnival theme, this time around. There were baby pretzels, baby corn dogs, twizzlers, skittles, kettle corn, pink lemonade and cotton candy. Joe joked about hanging out with Britt and I so that some of our award-winning talent would "rub off" on him, (which is of course ridiculous, as he is stunning artist in his own right). His piece got in the student show, although it didn't win any awards-- as predicted, all the awards went to random abstract or very "contemporary" pieces. So the show itself was not very exciting, although there were a handful of good pieces.
I also bought a super-cool pot from the Clay Pigeons, who had a table or two of ceramics in the hall. This is the second random pot I've bought, now. I need to start finding things to fill them with, I think. (Still, it's a very cool pot.)
So, uh, yeah. A very good evening, indeed.
