It's been a surprisingly successful weekend for painting. Ever since I sat down and finished Anna's commission (which you can see over here), I've really been itching to paint again. I even went ahead and joined a contest on deviantart, something I don't usually do, simply so I'd have a reason to sit down and do some paintings. Well, that and the contest prize is a new 132 set of Prismacolor pencils, a 30 set of Prisma markers, and some sketchbooks and things. Who can say no to the possibility of free art supplies? I need a new set of Prisma pencils anyway; when I was working on 'Gates of the Moon' I noticed a number of my staple colors are down to nubs or missing. No lie: the only white pencil I had was about 2" long. It was tricky.
The first one was my contest entry. The contest is tournament-style, pairing people up with each other and giving each pair a specific theme. The first round is all songs, so I got the song 'Fure fure koyuki' which is basically 'Falling Powdered Snow.' It's vocaloid song, so highly autotuned/computerized. I more or less gave up on listening to the song and just went with the lyrics.

Pertinent lyrics:
Within a veil of night, the moon illuminates us
Seeking the warmth of a strong embrace
With white breath and fingers numb from cold
We trace our names in the snow before it melts away
The song as-written is a pretty angsty teen breakup song, but I reinterpreted the whole thing as being about a mother and child and the process of growing up-- when you're little, you can't imagine living by yourself, but eventually you're an adult and you have to make your own way in life. I'm not sure how well that interpretation holds up, but it was the best I could do with somewhat awkward lyrics. (Full song is here)
That one was finished up Friday morning; I'd meant to get it done Thursday but didn't end up having time to paint before I had to prep for the Zoo reception.
Yesterday, I sat down to work on the real idea I'd had bouncing through my head all week (I actually sat down at work on my lunch break and was looking up references and doing thumbnails) which is a picture based on Owl City's song "To the Sky". It was incredibly bouncy and infectious; it's been stuck in my head for days. But it was a perfect song to do a painting of Aulani with, since I haven't ever actually painted her.

I'm just going to link to the whole song, since the melody is actually important to this one: here.
I feel like I have to fiddle with some details on this one still; I need to tweak her toes a little, and I might change her expression, I'm not sure. It was still a fun, quick little piece (Probably three or four hours total) and practice for the much more complicated piece I planned out, also inspired by the song.
Even if they're not the greatest things in the world, I'm happy to be painting again. I'd like to do some more traditional stuff in the near future; maybe some more clockwork birds.
